The likelihood of a woman having twins is only 3 out of 100. Discovering that you are one of these lucky women is very exciting. Several factors are known to influence the chances of twin pregnancies. Some populations are more likely to produce more twins. Despite these odds, it's inevitable to marvel about having twins. Even if there aren't any twins in your family, it wouldn't hurt to dream about giving birth to identical babies.

Morning sickness is the earliest sign of pregnancy. Its symptoms can be felt during the 6th week in single pregnancies. Those who are expecting twins, however, may experience nausea sooner than normal. Women have observed that morning sickness is more terrible in twin pregnancies. Having twins heightens a woman's sense of smell. If you feel your stomach churning at the sight of odorous food, then it would be best to see your obstetrician soon.

Unfortunately, all other discomforts associated with pregnancy seem to be amplified when one is having twins. Aside from morning sickness, expectant mothers may feel other amplified symptoms such as fatigue, swollen legs and water retention. Most women complain about extreme fatigue as the most bothersome pregnancy discomfort. Falling asleep on your desk is common.

Women who are expecting twins have higher levels of HCG or human chorionic human chorionic gonadotropin. Hence, pregnancy tests are able to detect twin pregnancies earlier. Early pregnancies would normally register as a thin line. Twin pregnancies, however, are linked with higher hormonal levels, which show as a thick line even during the first few weeks. Women who are carrying twins obviously have bigger bellies. They give birth earlier than those who are expecting a single baby.

Fetal movement is felt between the 16th and 18th week of pregnancy. Women who are carrying twins can feel their babies moving before this period. Early fetal movement and delivery is common in twin pregnancies. Unlike single babies which stay in the womb for 38 weeks, most twins are born before the 37th week. Babies who are delivered pre-term usually have lower birth weight, which poses several risks on their health.

Recent medical developments have made it safe for twins to be born through normal delivery. In the past, most twins were born through cesarean delivery. Though vaginal delivery is often preferred for twin pregnancies, there are certain cases when a cesarean delivery is more appropriate. This would depend on how your babies are positioned.

Only your gynecologist can tell if you're really having twins. A sonogram or a vaginal ultrasound will prove your suspicions of having twins. Several medical risks are associated with twin pregnancies. Early detection is necessary to help you plan ahead. Expect to eat an extra 300 calories a day when you're carrying twins. Extra portions of food that are rich in protein and calcium are recommended. You will feel more exhausted now that you're carrying 2 babies so be sure to get enough sleep. Visit your doctor regularly, in order to avoid medical risks associated with having twins.
